My name is Ellen and I am the founder of Caring Hearts Home Health. I am a Registered Nurse and I have experience working in hospitals and long term care, mainly with seniors along with patients who needed end-of-life care. To put it bluntly, these are overburdened and understaffed systems and the quality of care I could give to my patients was greatly diminished as I was only one person who was expected to care for 6-8 very sick individuals in these settings. This broke my heart and caused immense burnout as I wanted to give more to my patients but could not in this broken system. In particular, the way end-of-life was often dealt with in these institutions was very distressing to me and did not feel like it was putting the goals of the patient or their loved ones first.

I decided to leave the hospital and try to find another setting where I felt like I was truly helping people. I decided to work as a home care nurse and it was so much more fulfilling to be able to work with patients one-on-one, get to know them and provide care for them in their homes where they felt the most comfortable. However, I still saw gaps in home care and found that a lot of the services available were impersonal, confusing to navigate, rushed and only focused on physical health when health is so much more multifaceted.

This is what inspired me to create my own home care service. Where our focus is on holistic health, individualized patient and family centred care and we hire staff who truly care about what they do and who they serve. Our goal is to make our clients feel like they not only gained a caregiver but also a companion who enriches their life.

As a patient at SickKids for many years turned registered nurse, I truly care for the clients we serve and also the staff we hire. Let's work together to ensure more and more seniors can age with dignity and joy at home.
